Kevin Powery
By: Blakeley Dunn
Kevin Powery is native to Guanaja. He and his wife live in Mangrove Bight with the rest of his family near by. Kevin started fishing on the snapper boats, catching fish to feed his family and community. For the past two years, he has been a guide for Fly Fish Guanaja. He started out tagging along with his older brother, Kendall and was soon introduced to fly fishing and Fish for Change.
His experience with guiding and Fish for Change has led to him meeting so many people and seeing parts of the island he wouldn’t normally visit very often. Kevin has been involved in planting mangroves with F4C students to ensure the fishery will continue to thrive for generations to come. One of his favorite Fish for Change memories was during Girls Week 2022 when the girls were invited to stay in the homes of some of the guides’ families. This homestay gave the girls the opportunity to experience a different part of Guanaja island life. Kevin really enjoyed hearing about the girls’ experience of the homestay.

Kevin sees how Fish for Change has impacted everyone on the island. The kids on the island are now more interested in fishing and want to help protect their fishery. The kids have also been able to meet students from all over the US. That’s one of the biggest gifts from Fish for Change - the opportunity for people from Guanaja to meet and build relationships with other people who are passionate about fishing and about keeping the beautiful island of Guanaja pristine.
