Frequently asked questions
How can I ensure the safety of my child?
Fish for Change is teamed up with Global Rescue for the safety of our members. Students will buy travel and evac insurance during their registration. Trip Leaders are First Aid and CPR certified. At least one leader on each program has their Wilderness First Responder Certification. We have Emergency Action Plans in place and the local health clinic in direct communication in each location.
What level of fly fishing knowledge should my child have?
Any level of experience is welcomed in our program. Although we do recommend practicing your cast before arrival in order to assure the most success. Throughout the course of the week, our team will review everything from fly tying to knots to the fishery they are in. There will be one leader for every three students for a lot of personalized attention and help.
What if I don't have proper fishing equipment?
No worries. Our team has back up gear ready for you. Just let us know in advanced and we will make sure to have extra equipment secured!
Are there cheaper options for this trip?
We understand these trips are expensive and we do everything in our power to reduce the cost as much as possible. Students can always apply for one of our scholarships or financial aid if they match your needs. If you are interested in raising money to cover all or part of the expenses of your trip, feel free to make a personal fundraiser and raise money amongst your network.
How old do you have to be to attend?
Programs are focused on high school and college students. Weeks are separated based on age group. You can find which age bracket you fall into on our calendar. 14 - 22 is the general age range.
Will I be able to communicate with my child throughout the week?
On the first night of the course, we will be collecting students phones. Therefore, we recommend students to bring a separate camera. We promote a WiFi-free zone throughout the course of our programs in order to have students connect stronger with each other and nature. There will be a direct line of communication with staff throughout the week for updates. Also, we will have photos posted on instagram from the current day so you can stay up to date with your child’s adventure. Follow us here @fishforchange
Will credit be received from the course?
The course will include 10 hours of volunteer hours. Students may bring service hours forms with them to the program or email them in afterward and we will sign them for you.
Who do I communicate with before and during the program?
Please email [email protected] with any questions you have leading up to the program. If you have any questions on concerns while your child is abroad, please email [email protected] for assistance!
What is our drug and alcohol policy?
We have a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol. Students will sign a form before the program to confirm they will respect our regulations or be sent home at their own cost.
What should be packed for the trip?
Please reference page 6 of your trip packet for a packing list. If you have any questions, reach out!
What is the flying protocol?
If your child feels comfortable flying alone, we will have our team at the destination airport ready to greet students upon arrival. Our team also helps secure students on their flights to return home at the end of the week. If you would like a travel companion, we are happy to arrange that too!
