Wilmer Porras

Wilmer Porras: The Machaca Master

Wilmer Porras is a dedicated rafting and fly-fishing guide specializing in the unique art of targeting machaca in the scenic area of Sarapiquí, Costa Rica. Growing up in this vibrant region, Wilmer developed a deep connection to its waters from a young age. His childhood memories of fishing with his father every Sunday, initially using hand lines and worms, laid the foundation for his lifelong passion for fly-fishing.

As a guide, Wilmer offers a truly distinctive fly-fishing experience, utilizing rafts to navigate jungle rivers and casting cork flies that mimic the fruits and seeds that machaca naturally feed on. Using full force to ‘pop’ the fly onto the surface. This approach reflects the seamless integration of fishing with the surrounding environment. Wilmer emphasizes using sustainable catch-and-release techniques, ensuring that this extraordinary species and its habitat are preserved for generations to come.

“I love seeing how fishing connects families and inspires younger generations,” Wilmer shares. “It’s amazing how the Fish for Change students value sustainability, turning fishing into a sport that’s all about respecting nature while enjoying it.”
In addition to his guiding expertise, Wilmer is deeply passionate about conservation. By fostering teamwork and patience, he helps the students connect with the natural world and develop a profound appreciation for Costa Rica’s biodiversity.                 Costa Rica is home to an astonishing 5% of the world’s biodiversity, and Wilmer takes pride in contributing to its conservation. He believes in rational resource use, balancing the joy of fishing with the need to protect ecosystems. His goal is to show visitors that Costa Rica may be a small country, but it offers endless adventures, from rafting to unmatched fishing opportunities in lush, vibrant settings.
“I want people to understand how important it is to care for the environment,” Wilmer explains. “Fishing is more than catching a fish; it’s about ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same beauty and abundance we have today.” Through fishing sustainability, Wilmer is confident we can preserve this special fishery for future generations.
For Wilmer, every day on the water is an opportunity to connect with nature, share his knowledge, and ensure that Costa Rica remains a treasure for years to come
